It is a course on social norms, the foundations that glue societies collectively. It teaches the best way to diagnose social norms, and the best way to distinguish them from different social constructs, like customs or conventions. These distinctions are essential for efficient coverage interventions aimed to create new, useful norms or get rid of dangerous ones. The course teaches the best way to measure social norms and the expectations that help them, and the best way to resolve whether or not they trigger particular behaviors. The course is a joint Penn-UNICEF undertaking, and it consists of many examples of norms that maintain behaviors like youngster marriage, gender violence and sanitation practices.
That is Half 1 of the Social Norms, Social Change sequence.
